The marquee match-up of the day was the game between Whitebread Athletics and Shaq Fu. This game between two experienced teams with large rosters was everything the build-up said it would be. Whitebread quarterback Neil Stucki, this league's version of Kordell Stewart, ran for more yards than he passed for, but was able to lead his team to a big opening game victory. Stucki had all day to throw as he was protected by Torrence Phillips and Anthony Fantuzzi, the largest offensive line in league history. Since both rosters were so deep, both teams were well rested for the final push to win the game. Shaq Fu played a tough game but came up just short in the end as Whitebread won 26-20. The league first occurred in one of the close games of the day, a hotly contested match-up between the Mountaineers and the Fighting Monarchs. This game featured the first time that a woman played in the league when Rebecca Gilman and Lori Shumaker took the field for the Monarchs, but that was not the biggest story. That shocking development was when Gilman recorded the first sack by a woman, as she sacked Mountaineer quarterback Cary Altschuler in the second half of the game. The Mountaineers had a rough time getting into sync in the first half as the Fighting Monarchs jumped out to a 20-8 halftime lead. The Monarchs captain Edward Hanover burned the Mountaineers defense all afternoon The Monarchs are a team that has potential. The Mountaineers did not practiced before the game and it showed. The offense was lacking in the first half as the Monarchs kept pressuring starting quarterback Reince Priebus into bad passes. In the second half, Altschuler took over as quarterback and did his best Dan Marino impression, not only wearing as much protective equipment as Marino but leading his team from a 28-14 deficit to a 29-28 victory with a game winning drive in the final minute of the game. The blowout happened as the Quakers jumped out to an early lead over Final Judgment and never gave Judgment a chance to get back in the game. The Quakers won 37-6 and totally dominated Judgment. But the biggest news coming out of Quakers camp was the brouhaha between team captain and quarterback Andrew Atkins and team malcontent Dave Canter. Atkins and Canter argued over who is the leader and Atkins gave Him an ultimatum saying, "Either you go or I do!" Apparently Atkins won the argument as well as the game against Judgment. At last report Canter was trying to field a team, but he may be on the injured list for the season with a groin pull. The other two games scheduled for Friday, Triple Crown vs. Fun-N-Gun and WYA vs. Expansion, have been postponed due to the fact that neither Fun-N-Gun nor Expansion showed up for their games. A reminder for everyone in the league, the schedule will be posted under the softball schedule on the Wednesday of every week. So keep your eyes open so that we won't have to forfeit any teams in the future. |
